Yardstick Kitchen Island Bench

History. Rehabilitated.

This piece is truly one-of-a-kind. It represents a history of American furniture making, all in one place. The solid maple sideboard was originally manufactured by the Cherokee Furniture company around the 1960s. The Cherokee Furniture company dates back to 1903 when it was established as Bryson City Pump Works in Swain, North Carolina. North Carolina has long history as a center of furniture production in the US.

The other pre-eminent furniture city is right here in Grand Rapids. The original “Furniture City”, this piece captures the small business manufacturing, construction and furniture building history of the town. Featuring over 45 vintage yardsticks, each yardstick tells part of the story of Grand Rapids. In a final nod towards the future of Grand Rapids, the kitchen island bench is backed with Madcap Coffee roaster coffee bags. A leading local roasting house, Madcap is part of the future of the city and no kitchen is complete without beautiful smelling coffee.

The sideboard features four smooth running drawers, one of which is double width and the other is double depth. Two side cupboards complete the piece. It features all original hardware and is in exceptional condition.

The table is sold with three matching barstools, made in North Carolina by Cochrane Furniture. A family owned company founded in 1905, the business closed its doors in 2009. The solid oak bar stools are a piece of furniture history that is now irreplaceable.
